The Hypervariable Regions I & II in the

Mitochondrial DNA Map modified from
forensic research article
The human mitochondrial genome is 16569 bp. It contains a control region (CR) centered around the origin. This region does not encode information for proteins. It contains however, two hypervariable segments (HVSI & HVSII), which are used for genotyping. In our lab we will be using an extended HVSI segment (15919-16569) for PCR amplification. The extended segment will include conserved sites for primer binding, which we will use in lab 2. See Detail here. The PCR product size is 549 bp and will contain segment 15972-16520.
